Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's Royal Baby: Everything You Need to Know

            Little Archie is finally here!

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are officially parents! The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who tied the knot on May 19, have welcomed their first child together: Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor. Here's everything you need to know about the newest royal baby.

He was born on May 6.

Harry and Meghan welcomed baby Archie at 5:26 A.M. in the U.K. on Monday, May 6, Buckingham Palace announced. He weighed seven pounds and three ounces, and the duke was present in the room during the delivery.

Royal fans were originally expecting Baby Sussex to arrive at the end of April or early May, according to clues Meghan had reportedly dropped during one of her public appearances. In a brief interview following the birth, Harry said his son was "a little bit overdue."

The couple first announced the news on Instagram, and included in the caption: "The Duchess and baby are both healthy and well, and the couple thank members of the public for their shared excitement and support during this very special time in their lives."

Meghan's pregnancy was first announced in October by an official statement from Kensington Palace: "Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Sussex is expecting a baby in the Spring of 2019."

            He was born in London.

Although Meghan and Harry have now settled down in Windsor, the duchess still gave birth in their previous city of residence, London, according to royal correspondent Omid Scobie. However unlike sister-in-law Kate Middleton, who delivered her three children at the Lindo Wing of St. Mary's Hospital, Meghan gave birth at the Portland Hospital in central London.

Details of Archie's birth weren't shared in advance as they were for William and Kate's kids. Harry and Meghan made "a personal decision to keep the plans around the arrival of their baby private,” Buckingham Palace announced nearly a month before the baby was born.

He made his debut two days after his birth.

Also unlike Kate, Meghan didn't pose for a post-birth photoshoot hours after her baby's delivery. Instead, she, Harry, and Archie had a family photo call two days after the birth at Windsor Castle. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex previously said they'd share their little one with the world after they’ve celebrated “privately as a family,” according to the palace statement.

His name includes a tribute to Prince Harry.

Harry and Meghan announced their son's name two days after his birth, and after they introduced the child to the queen. The name Archie, a variant of Archibald with English and German origins, means "genuine and bold." Harrison means "son of Harry"—clearly a nod to his father.

Mountbatten-Windsor is the last name to descendants of Queen Elizabeth II who don't have the royal titles His Royal Highness Prince or Her Royal Highness Princess. The royal family's official website says:

"For the most part, members of the Royal Family who are entitled to the style and dignity of HRH [His/Her Royal Highness] Prince or Princess do not need a surname, but if at any time any of them do need a surname (such as upon marriage), that surname is Mountbatten-Windsor."

It took a while for the couple to decide on a name. In an interview hours after the baby's birth, Harry said he and Meghan were "still thinking about names." The day after, Aunt Kate Middleton said she was still looking forward to finding out her nephew's name. It seems like the extra time was totally worth it.

Harry and Meghan broke the news of Archie's name in an Instagram post with the queen, Prince Philip, and Meghan's mom, Doria Ragland.

He's seventh in line for the throne.

Archie will follow his grandfather, uncle, cousins, and father in the order of succession. His place in line will get pushed back (as will Harry's) if William and Kate have more children. So far, the lineup goes as follows:

            1. Prince Charles
            2. Prince William
            3. Prince George
            4. Princess Charlotte
            5. Prince Louis
            6. Prince Harry
            7. Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor

He doesn't have a royal title.

Meghan and Harry have decided not to give their child a royal title to keep his life as normal as possible, but if they did want to give him one, he wouldn't have been a prince like his cousins George and Louis.

As it currently stands, only the children of the first son of the Prince of Wales will have prince/princess royal titles. That means Prince William's children get prince/princess titles, but Prince Harry's kids won't.

Since Harry and Meghan's first child is a boy, his title would have been Earl of Dumbarton, which is one of the lesser titles given to his father. (Harry's full titles are: Duke of Sussex, Earl of Dumbarton, and Baron Kilkeel.)

If the couple's first child was a girl, her title would've been be Lady [name] Mountbatten-Windsor. All of their following children would be titled Lady or Lord [name] Mountbatten-Windsor—if Harry and Meghan allow it. But considering they skipped giving titles for their first child, it doesn't seem likely that they'll start with their future kids.

              He's the Queen's eighth great-grandchild.

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip now have eight great-grandchildren. They are:

              1. Savannah Phillips, 7, daughter of Peter and Autumn Phillips
              2. Isla Phillips, 6, daughter of Peter and Autumn Phillips
              3. Prince George, 5, son of Prince William and Kate Middleton
              4. Mia Tindall, 4, daughter of Zara and Mike Tindall
              5. Princess Charlotte, 3, daughter of Prince William and Kate Middleton
              6. Prince Louis, 5 months, son of Prince William and Kate Middleton
              7. Lena Tindall, 4 months, daughter of Zara and Mike Tindall
              8. Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor

Archie is understood to be a British citizen, but he's also be eligible for U.S. citizenship.

Harry and Meghan's child will have British citizenship because of his father, Associated Press reports.

Even though Meghan is in the process of becoming a British citizen, the process is lengthy—it often takes years—and likely won't be completed by the time she gives birth in the spring. That means Archie could still be eligible to be a American citizen.

                The New York Times reports:

"According to the State Department, children like the expected royal baby, who are born abroad, in wedlock, to one American citizen and one 'alien,' automatically acquire citizenship at birth, as long as the American parent has lived in the United States for a requisite period of time."

That period is five years, and at least two of those years had to be after the parent turned 14 years old.

However, the baby's American citizenship would still have to be validated. In order to do that, Harry and Meghan would have to send in documentation, and report the birth of their baby to the American consulate. It's a whole process that would ultimately be up to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
